MR. ENTERTAINMENT - LOUIE VELEZ
Louie Velez's portrayal of Sammy
Davis Jr. has been captivating audiences as "Mr. Entertainment"
since he began his tribute back in New York circa 1987. He
remembers watching Sammy on TV, and trying to imitate him while
viewing the "Ed Sullivan Show". Velez hails from Amsterdam, New
York. His show stopping talent has been acknowledged not only by
the family of the late Mr. Davis, but also by Wayne Newton and
the many thousands who've witnessed Velez perform what many
consider the most amazing musical impersonation ever seen on any
stage. The voice of Velez is as close to the real Sammy as it
gets. The incredible physical resemblance Velez bears to Mr.
Davis is truly uncanny. Even Sammy himself took a double take
when he met Velez.
In 1992, the City of Las Vegas
invited Velez to pay tribute to Sammy at the Dedication Ceremony
of the Sammy Davis Jr. Plaza, with Sammy's entire family in
attendance. The family showed tremendous appreciation and
support after a very touching performance, and Sammy's sister
commented to Velez that he brought back beautiful memories to a
sister, a daughter, a son, a niece and many, many friends with
his moving tribute to their loved one, Sammy Davis Jr. George
Kirby, a great comedian and close friend of Sammy who has since
passed, was also there and expressed a high regard for Velez and
his captivating performance, which seemed to bring a rise of
emotion for everyone in attendance.
Velez has appeared on The Tonight
Show starring Jay Leno, The Miss Universe Pageant, he opened at
the MGM for the original Four Tops, and appeared at The Victor
Awards at the Las Vegas Hilton. Velez appeared in " Legends in
Concert" for several years at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas,
which brought him back East to Bally's Park Place in Atlantic
City and other major cities nationwide.
Velez has been portraying Sammy
for several years and has appeared with such stars as Debbie
Reynolds, Jermaine Jackson, Marty Allen, Kenny Rogers, Phyllis
McGuire, Steve Rossi, Rich Little, Louie Anderson, Rip Taylor
and the original Drifters, just to name a few. Prior to his days
as Sammy, he opened in an Upstate New York Summer Theater for
Tom Jones and Tony Orlando. Velez has appeared in every major
hotel on the strip in Las Vegas.
It was no surprise when Velez was
cast on the big screen in "Road to Graceland" with Bridget Fonda
and Harvey Keitel, and Executive Producer, Priscilla Presley.
Ironically, he was cast as a Sammy Davis Jr. impersonator! He
also appeared in "Dream for an Insomniac", and has been featured
in several commercials and in print ads. |
